Chicago SEO Firm - Pinnacle Web Solutions Wed, 14 Aug 2013 16:45:10 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Organic Search Result Listings Explained Mon, 15 Aug 2011 22:15:53 +0000 Zach One question that comes up quite frequently when I’m discussing search engine optimization with clients is, what does “organic” search refer too?  If you’ve read up at all on SEO, you’ve probably come across this phrase.  The best way to answer this question is to start with an overview of the search engine results page, because there are several kinds of results on that page, organic being one of them.  I’ll refer to Google’s results in this post, since that is what most people use, although the explanation I give fits for all the major search engines.

Most of the time, when a person types a keyword or keyphrase into Google, the search results page (the page that has all the website listings on it, commonly referred to as the SERPS page by those in the SEO world), will have at least 2 distinct sections of website listings.

The first section of listings appear at the very top of the page in a “pinkish” colored box.  These are sponsored ads.  That is, these results are there because an advertiser is paying to have them displayed whenever someone types certain keywords (chosen by the advertiser).  These are called Pay-Per-Click (PPC) listings, because the advertisers pay a set amount (ranging anywhere from 5 cents to $40) to Google every time someone clicks their ad.  PPC ads are not only displayed at the top of the page, they are usually also displayed down the right hand side of the page.

Pay-per-click ads can be a terrific way to bring instant traffic to your website, since you can get ads set up and running within a few hours.  I go into more details about the pros and cons of PPC advertising in a later post.

The second type of listings that appear in the search results page are the local results.  These results are displayed whenever a searcher includes a local parameter within their search query, like a city name or zip code.  These listings are the websites of local businesses in your area.  For example, if you type “Chicago plumber” into Google, you’re going to get the listings of plumbing businesses in the Chicago area,  usually denoted by a red, lettered “push-pin” beside or under the listing.  Along with being displayed on the map to the right, there will be a link to the businesses Google Places page, in addition to the business’ own website.  What is the Google places page?  Again, that will be discussed in detail in a later post, as it is HUGELY important nowadays for local businesses.  These listings are free to be included in and Google determines what order the businesses show up in.

Now, on to the third, most important, listings on the search results page – organic listings!  These website listings are the main part of the search results page, and run down the center of the page with big blue headings.  These are the listings that the vast majority of searchers will click on.  In fact, these listings receive about 60% of the clicks (and the first 3 organic listings receive about 70% of that!).

These listings are referred to as organic listings because they are natural results.  You know, like organic food, they are completely natural, “unfooled around with”.  Google determines the order of these listings based on which websites it deems the most relevant to the search query; most relevant at the top, least relevant on page 100.

Here’s a picture outlining the different types of listings on search results pages.

chicago plumber search results

Search engine optimization is the process of making your website as appealing and relevant as possible to Google for specific search terms so it shows up in the top spot in the organic listings.  There really is no SEO necessary for PPC ads, and local listings take a different kind of optimization.

So, next time you hear “organic results” think” oh yeah, those are the main results shown on the search results page running down the middle of the page and their order is determined by Google according to relevancy”.

Got it? Good :- )

Explode Your Website Traffic With PPC! Wed, 10 Aug 2011 22:15:06 +0000 Zach Ever wanted to simply throw a switch and get floods of highly-qualified traffic to your website immediately?  Sure you have!  Traffic (website visitors) is the reason people have websites.  They do nothing but cost you time and money if no one ever visits!

Problem is, nowadays, you can have the best, most attractive, engaging website, and very few people will wander across it unless you have putting some serious time and energy into search engine optimization.  And SEO is a real pain in the behind to people who don’t know how to do it (that’s what companies like us are here for!).

The other bad part about SEO, besides being tedious, is that it can take a very long time to see results.  It can take months to get on the first page of Google for specific keywords, and who wants to wait that long!?

Enter, Pay-Per-Click advertising!  PPC advertising is a “magic” way to bring floods of website visitors directly to your website immediately.  I’m talking like, hundreds or thousands of visitors overnight!  Sounds interesting, huh?  It sure is!

PPC is a form of advertising that all the major search engines have displayed on their search result pages.  The search engines will give you a spot at top of the page or along the right-hand side of the page, as long as you’re willing to pay them for every visitor who clicks on your ad, hence the name, pay-per-click.

The most popular PPC program is Google’s Adwords program.  This advertising network will get you the most clicks (because many more people use Google than any other search engine) but is also the most expensive to use.  Here’s an overview of how Adwords works.

1. Sign up with Adwords. It is free to join, but you must include a credit card during the sign up process, or your ads will not go live.

2. Specify which keywords you want to trigger your ads to be displayed. You can be as broad or as specific as you want. “shoes” “men’s shoes” “men’s Nike tennis shoes” “red and black used tap dancing shoes” – whatever keywords you think are being typed by people most likely to buy what your service or product.

3. Set your Ad spend budget. The first part of this is your maximum cost per click you’re willing to pay.  The price for your ad to be displayed works like an auction.  A very competitive keyword like “how to make money online” is being bid on by many people trying to outbid each other to get the top spot, so the price per click will be much higher.  Alternatively, “Millersburg, Ohio nail salon” is a very specific keyword that will have fewer people bidding on it, so the price per click will be much less.

Prices can range anywhere from a couple cents per click, to upwards of $40 per click.  It all just depends on the competitiveness of the keyword.

The second part of your budget is your daily limit.  This sets the amount you’re willing to spend per day on clicks.  So if you are willing to spend $50 per day, you set that as your daily budget, and then once you’ve used up that amount, your ads will stop being displayed.

4. Write your ad. This is the final step to setting up your adwords campaign.  You write whatever you think will entice viewers to click on your ad.  As long as you stick within their ad writing guidelines, you can write whatever you want.

5.  Once you’ve chosen keywords, set your budget and written your ad, your PPC campaign is ready to roll! It will begin displaying your ads on the search results page within a few hours.

The thing you have to understand about PPC, is that it really is a two-edged sword.  It can be a terrific way to bring tons of highly-targeted leads to your business, but, if not used properly it can end up costing you a whole lot of money.  For example, if you choose too many keywords or the wrong kind of keywords, you may get a lot of clicks, but you won’t be getting any good leads or conversions.  Then all you’re left with is really big bill you owe Google!

Want to try the power of Google Adwords for your business?  We can set up and manage a Google Adwords campaign for you.  We know Adwords inside and out and optimize your campaign so you get the absolute most value for your advertising dollar.  In fact, we have $100 adwords vouchers for any new Adwords clients!  That gives you $100 worth of clicks without costing you a dime!

Why Mobile Marketing Beats Email Marketing Fri, 05 Aug 2011 22:13:51 +0000 Zach

For years, email marketing has been one of the best ways to stay in contact with customers, and potential customers.  There is great power in being able to blast out an email about an event, product promotion or company update to instantaneously to a limitless number of people.

But, during the last few years, a new marketing medium has forced its way to the forefront – mobile marketing (marketing to cell phone users).  Let’s compare mobile and email marketing and I think you’ll agree with me that mobile marketing is something no serious marketer should ignore.

The basic premise of email and mobile marketing is the same – get a message out to a group of people who have opted in to your list.  The one big rule about building a list of people to contact is that they must choose and confirm the desire to be included in your list; otherwise any attempt by you to contact them would be considered spam.

The way the message is communicated to your list is the big difference between email and mobile marketing.  With email marketing, people are receiving emails; with mobile marketing, subscribers are receiving text messages directly to their mobile device.

So how does one go about building a list of subscribers?  Well, the most effective way to build your list is to entice people to join your list by offering something that they want.  That can be an exclusive discount or promotion, or a helpful and interesting report of some sort.  If you’re building an email list, you will have some form on your website for visitors to fill out to join your list and receive their free gift.

If you’re building a list of people for your mobile marketing campaign, people are added to it when they text a short code to a specific number.  For example, if you’re trying to build a mobile marketing list for your pizza joint, you could offer a 20% discount on your specialty pizza if one texts “discount pizza” to 555555.  Once they send that text, they will receive a confirmation text back, and then they are entered into your list.

The big advantage to list building for a mobile campaign is that the user can actively join your list from a variety of sources.  For example, back to our pizza example.  You can put a simple phrase, something like “for a free small pizza text ‘freepizza’ to 55555”, wherever you have access.  Put it on signage, on your delivery vehicles, on your website, on your menus, newspaper ads, on radio ads, etc.  That gets your message out to a huge number of people who will choose to join your list, who doesn’t want a free pizza!?

As your list builds, you will have a bigger and bigger pool of people who will be interested in other specials, deals and promotions you have to offer, and you can get the message out to them instantly whenever you want!  All it takes is one quick text message.

And think about this – how often do you NOT have your cell phone with you?  If you’re like most cell phone users, the answer to that question is “never”!  So, now you have a huge pool of people, who have their cell phones with them at times, who can receive a notification about your spur-of-the-moment “happy hour” at your pizza shop, no matter where they are or what they’re doing!

Compare that to your list of email subscribers, who will only see your email blast if they are at their computer.  Even though more and more people have the ability to check their email on their phone, the vast majority of email users still will only see their email when they are at home at your computer.  See the advantage?

Now, I’ve left the best thing about mobile marketing for last!  Do you know what an “open-rate”?  It is the word that describes the rate at which people in your list will open and read your message.  With email marketing, this rate is relatively low, around 40%.  That means that only 4 out of every 10 people on your list will ever see your email!  What do you think the open-rate of text messages is?  How about 97 percent!  Yes, every 9.7 people out of 10 on your mobile marketing list will open up and read your text message.  Pretty powerful numbers, huh?  That is why mobile marketing is THE form of constant contact marketing that you simply cannot ignore if you’re serious about marketing your business!

Why Is My Website Buried on Page 25 of Google!? Mon, 01 Aug 2011 22:12:53 +0000 Zach
It is so frustrating, isn’t it?  You’ve spent so much time, or so much money, or both, to have this amazing website built for your company.  Everything is perfect on it, all new pictures and graphics, and every page has been proofread five times.  You have your contact information boldly displayed on each page, and you can’t wait for the phone to start ringing, with all these new leads that will come from your website!
One problem.

No one is finding your website!  Besides for a few daily visitors who are searching specifically for your business, your site is not getting any new visitors searching for the services you provide.  Is it because there just aren’t many people searching online for what you provide?  Absolutely not!  People search for EVERYTHING online!  Trust me on that!  It most likely is because your beautiful new website for your dental business is buried on page 10 for keywords like “Chicago dentist” “teeth whitening Chicago” and “dental office Chicago”, etc.

Here are a couple stats for you – 4 out of 5 consumers search online for business.  And ninety percent of all searchers will NEVER look past the first page of search results! That means if you’re even on page 3 out of 100, you might as well be on page 100.  No one is going to find your website.
So, why the heck are the one of the unfortunate many whose websites are stuck in the cyber abyss of pages 3-100?  What makes the first page listings so much better that Google decides to show them first?
Here’s the answer in one word: RELEVANCY

Google, and the other major search engines, show websites in order of relevancy to the search term.  The absolute most relevant Chicago dental website (in the “eyes” of Google) will be shown in the #1 spot for the search term “Chicago dentist” and other related searches.
Ok, that makes sense, right?  Google wants to show the best results for its users, and of course that means that it matches relevant websites to search queries.
But, what makes one website more appealing, more relevant, than another website?
Here’s the answer in three words:
1: Content
2: Popularity
3: Trust

The search engines look at these three factors when determining relevancy of website to search queries.  The first one, content, is all about YOUR site, the content on your site.  Do the words, pictures, page titles and tags of your pages have the search term in them?  If so, that will move your site up in the rankings.  Here’s one big free SEO tip – the title of your home page should have your targeted keywords within it.  Back to the dental example.  If you want to show up high for searches about teeth whitening in Chicago, those exact words should be in the title of your homepage.  This shows Google that your website is about, in part, teeth whitening in Chicago.
The second factor, popularity, is the most important ranking factor.  This has to do with incoming links to your site from other websites.  If site A has links to it from 200 other websites, and site B has 20,000 links from other websites, which one would seem to be more “popular” to Google?  The one with 20,000 links obviously.  People link to other sites because they believe there is something about that site that is work pointing out.  Google takes this as a sign that the site has good content on it, and again, Google is all about providing website with good, relevant content at the top of their search results.
This is a big part of search engine optimization, making sure you get lots of links to your website, not just any old links, but the right kind of links.  I won’t go into all the details about what makes a link the “right” kind of link, I’ll save all of that for another post.
The third and final factor is trust.  This simply means, does Google trust your site?  Google, and the other major search engines prefer to show older, more well-established sites in their search results.  This is why it is much easier to get a 10 year old site to rank for a competitive keyword compared to a site that was created yesterday.  A site that regularly publishes fresh, unique content will also gain more trust from Google.
So that is it, in a very, very broad nutshell.  Google and the other search engines have extremely complicated algorithms they apply to every search query to determine  the order of the listings in the search results, but they all have to do with content, popularity and trust.
Want to get your site to the #1 spot in Google? Contact the pros here at Pinnacle Web Solutions for a free SEO consultation!  We’ve been getting websites to the top of the search engines for a long time, and would be happy to blast your site to page #1 of Google!

Part 1 of Search Engine Optimization: On-Site Optimization Thu, 28 Jul 2011 21:58:27 +0000 Zach Search engine optimization can be broken down into two main types, on-site optimization and off-site optimization.  On-site optimization describes the optimization of your actual website pages, while off-site optimization refers to mainly to the process of building quality one-way links from other website to yours.

These two parts, on-site optimization and off-site optimization both must be done correctly or your website will not reach its full ranking potential and you’ll end up wasting a great deal of time, energy, money or all three of those things.

Today, I’m going to go into detail about the first component of SEO, on-site optimization.  I’ll discuss off-site optimization in a later post.

What is On-Site Optimization?

On-site optimization is the process of making your website’s content (actual copy on the pages, images tags, headings, webpage structure, titles and meta-data) optimized for specific keyword phrases that you are targeting.  This process, unlike off-site optimization, only has to be done once, and updated whenever you change your website’s content or change targeted keywords.

When it comes to optimizing your content for specific keywords, you need to walk a somewhat fine line.  Obviously, the keywords need to be in your content, titles and tags, but you don’t want them stuffed everywhere.  The general rule of thumb is to keep your content reader-friendly, with the keywords sprinkled throughout.

One of the most important parts of on-site optimization is the title of your webpages.  You always want to have your targeted keywords mentioned at least once in the titles of your pages.  The title of your webpage tells visitors (and Google) what that particular page is about, so you want your keywords in the title so Google knows that is a very relevant match for that keyword and it will display it higher up in the search results for that keyword.

On-site optimization is important, but don’t overestimate it.  Proper on-site optimization can only take you so far.  It is done once, and that’s it.  After optimizing your site, you’d probably notice a nice jump in the search results ranking, but it’s most likely not going to stick you at the #1 spot (unless the keyword has absolutely no competition).

On-site optimization will get you about 25% of the way there; what takes your website the rest of the 75% to the number one spot is off-site optimization, the building of quality links to your website.

I have a good example of how on-site optimization can affect your website’s ranking.  I picked up new client this month,  They are a Bed and Breakfast in Ohio.

Their website had absolutely no real search engine optimization done to it, on-site or off-site.  The first thing I did was improve their on-site optimization.  No off-site optimization was done during this time, no linking at all.  All I did was optimize their homepage for their targeted keywords.  The effects of these changes in their search position in Google is very interesting.  Here it is: On-Site Optimization Results

Keyword Before On-Site Optimization After On-Site Optimization
B & B keyword 1 Not within the top 100 results #18
B & B keyword 2 #47 #27
B & B keyword 3 #43 #21
B & B keyword 4 #46 #23
B & B keyword 5 Not within the top 100 results #25
B & B keyword 6 Not within the top 100 results #23

Note: Results are referring to Google’s organic search results

As you can see, some simple on-site optimization jumped their website up a minimum of 20 places in the rankings!  Now, you have to take these results with a grain of salt, because these results will not be typical for all websites.  It’s determined mainly on the competitiveness of the keywords.  And these keywords are relatively low-competition.  But the principle remains the same no matter what the competition is, on-site optimization can only get you part-way there.

So, the results from the on-site optimization are good, yes, but the thing is, the website isn’t ranking on the first page for any of the keywords, and THAT is where it needs to be!  This is what I mean when I talked about the effectiveness of on-site optimization.  If I didn’t do another thing with the site, it would stay relatively where it is ranking now.  It is the off-site optimization, the building of links to the site that will take the site from the 2nd and 3rd pages and blast it to the top of the first page!

If you want your website to be blasted to the top of the search engines, be sure to drop us a line and we’ll come up an effective search engine optimization plan for your business!  Pinnacle web solutions is an SEO firm in Chicago, providing the best SEO services!

Boost Your Bottom Line Wed, 15 Sep 2010 08:16:31 +0000 Zach Every day thousands of people are searching for what your business offers.  Are they finding your website?  Not unless it is listed at the top of search results.  Eighty percent of searchers don’t ever look past the first page of results! Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what gets your site to the top of search results.  At Pinnacle Web Solutions, we specialize in best practice SEO that gets your website to the top of the major search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing), and we keep it there!  Let us take your site to the top, and you’ll be amazed at how it revolutionizes your business.

Your Website Alone Will Not Get the Job Done

You may have the most well-done, captivating, sales-generating website in your industry, but it will do absolutely nothing for you if no one can find it!  Websites,no matter how well-constructed, will never get visitors when lost in the cyber abyss of pages 3-100 of search engine results.  Google, and the other major search engines, are very picky about who they choose to show on the first page.  This is where search engine optimization comes in.  It is the process of optimizing your website so that the search engines decide it is an excellent match for certain keywords, therefore listing it at the top of the results.

You Cannot Afford to Ignore Your Online Presence

Today, the Internet is the number one tool consumers use to find products and services. Four out of every five Internet users search online for services and products to buy.  Forget getting listed in the yellow pages, their most common use these days is as door stops!  And the effectiveness of radio, TV and billboard ads continues to decline.  Whether or not you want to admit it, the Internet is where people are turning to find everything they need.

Here’s another staggering statistic – the #1 search result listing grabs over 42% of search traffic, while the #2 result scrapes barely 12 percent!  If you’re not on the first page, you may as well not be listed at all, because no one is going to see your site.  All the while, your competition who has optimized their websites will be at the top, taking in all the new customers who find them online.

If you have a website and have been disappointed with the lack of traffic and resulting sales, it certainly is not because there are not enough people searching in your niche.  Trust me, they’re there, with credit cards in hand, ready to buy!  Your lack of website traffic is because you’re not listed high enough for the right keywords.

How Pinnacle Web Solutions Gets Your Site to the Top

Search Engine Optimization is not a guessing game.  There are defined steps of SEO that will get your site to the top of Google and the other search engines.  Getting to the top of the search engines is all about three main things - relevancy, popularity and stability.  We increase these three factors for your website, which in turn makes your site so attractive to Google that it can’t help but list it in the top results for your niche’s keywords.

Keyword and Key Phrase Analysis

The foundation of search engine optimization is sound keyword research.  The first thing we do is analyze keywords and phrases Internet users are using, in addition to geographic location keywords, and determine which are the most relevant to your business.  These keywords are what we will insert into your website’s tags, titles and content so the search engines will determine that your site is a good match for those search terms.

Link Building

This account for roughly 50 percent of the SEO campaign, as it is critical to your success.  We implement on-site link building strategies, as well as build one-way incoming links from other websites to your website.  This greatly improves the relevancy of your site for targeted search terms.

Website Coding

This is another important part of SEO, because your site must be easily accessed and read by the search engines.  This ensures the search engines will be able to index the content of each page, which shows them the relevancy of your site for our targeted keywords.

Analytical Software Implementation

If your website currently does not have analytical software installed to track and monitor visitor trends, we install and configure the software.  Also, we track and report your website’s search engine positioning and SEO data each month.  This ensures that you are seeing real and tangible results from your SEO campaign.

Monthly Maintenance

SEO is certainly not a “one and done” type of project, that can be walked away from.  It must be updated and added to on a regular basis to keep your ranking, and also to account for any changes in search engine algorithms (what determines website quality and relevance).  We update your project monthly, and also ensure that any new pages you add are included in our SEO implementation.

PPC (Pay Per Click) Management

This is used as a supplement to organic search engine optimization.  It involves creating small ads that are displayed in search engine results.  These are the “sponsored” listings you may notice at the very top and along the right hand side of search result pages.  This is a common way to bring “instant” traffic to your site.  Once you set up a PPC campaign, your ad begins running immediately, which can send a large influx of visitors to your website.  You bid on which keywords you want to trigger your ad, and pay a set amount each time someone clicks on your ad.  We do not recommend our clients use PPC as their sole source of website traffic, but it can be a very nice supplement to a solid organic search result campaign.

Our Guarantee

We can guarantee first page placement for your website for your desired keywords.  We cannot guarantee the time length required to achieve it, as a certain level of unpredictability is always present when working with search engines.  While we usually do achieve #1 ranking for targeted keywords, we simply cannot guarantee that result to every client.  The ranking of websites is ultimately out of our hands, as it is controlled exclusively by the search engine companies, and therefore we would be silly to guarantee #1 results.  Run far away from any company that guarantees “#1 result within 2 months!” or anything similar to that, as they obviously do not know what they are doing.
