Most of the time, when a person types a keyword or keyphrase into Google, the search results page (the page that has all the website listings on it, commonly referred to as the SERPS page by those in the SEO world), will have at least 2 distinct sections of website listings.
The first section of listings appear at the very top of the page in a “pinkish” colored box. These are sponsored ads. That is, these results are there because an advertiser is paying to have them displayed whenever someone types certain keywords (chosen by the advertiser). These are called Pay-Per-Click (PPC) listings, because the advertisers pay a set amount (ranging anywhere from 5 cents to $40) to Google every time someone clicks their ad. PPC ads are not only displayed at the top of the page, they are usually also displayed down the right hand side of the page.
Pay-per-click ads can be a terrific way to bring instant traffic to your website, since you can get ads set up and running within a few hours. I go into more details about the pros and cons of PPC advertising in a later post.
The second type of listings that appear in the search results page are the local results. These results are displayed whenever a searcher includes a local parameter within their search query, like a city name or zip code. These listings are the websites of local businesses in your area. For example, if you type “Chicago plumber” into Google, you’re going to get the listings of plumbing businesses in the Chicago area, usually denoted by a red, lettered “push-pin” beside or under the listing. Along with being displayed on the map to the right, there will be a link to the businesses Google Places page, in addition to the business’ own website. What is the Google places page? Again, that will be discussed in detail in a later post, as it is HUGELY important nowadays for local businesses. These listings are free to be included in and Google determines what order the businesses show up in.
Now, on to the third, most important, listings on the search results page – organic listings! These website listings are the main part of the search results page, and run down the center of the page with big blue headings. These are the listings that the vast majority of searchers will click on. In fact, these listings receive about 60% of the clicks (and the first 3 organic listings receive about 70% of that!).
These listings are referred to as organic listings because they are natural results. You know, like organic food, they are completely natural, “unfooled around with”. Google determines the order of these listings based on which websites it deems the most relevant to the search query; most relevant at the top, least relevant on page 100.
Here’s a picture outlining the different types of listings on search results pages.
Search engine optimization is the process of making your website as appealing and relevant as possible to Google for specific search terms so it shows up in the top spot in the organic listings. There really is no SEO necessary for PPC ads, and local listings take a different kind of optimization.
So, next time you hear “organic results” think” oh yeah, those are the main results shown on the search results page running down the middle of the page and their order is determined by Google according to relevancy”.
Got it? Good :- )]]>
Problem is, nowadays, you can have the best, most attractive, engaging website, and very few people will wander across it unless you have putting some serious time and energy into search engine optimization. And SEO is a real pain in the behind to people who don’t know how to do it (that’s what companies like us are here for!).
The other bad part about SEO, besides being tedious, is that it can take a very long time to see results. It can take months to get on the first page of Google for specific keywords, and who wants to wait that long!?
Enter, Pay-Per-Click advertising! PPC advertising is a “magic” way to bring floods of website visitors directly to your website immediately. I’m talking like, hundreds or thousands of visitors overnight! Sounds interesting, huh? It sure is!
PPC is a form of advertising that all the major search engines have displayed on their search result pages. The search engines will give you a spot at top of the page or along the right-hand side of the page, as long as you’re willing to pay them for every visitor who clicks on your ad, hence the name, pay-per-click.
The most popular PPC program is Google’s Adwords program. This advertising network will get you the most clicks (because many more people use Google than any other search engine) but is also the most expensive to use. Here’s an overview of how Adwords works.
1. Sign up with Adwords. It is free to join, but you must include a credit card during the sign up process, or your ads will not go live.
2. Specify which keywords you want to trigger your ads to be displayed. You can be as broad or as specific as you want. “shoes” “men’s shoes” “men’s Nike tennis shoes” “red and black used tap dancing shoes” – whatever keywords you think are being typed by people most likely to buy what your service or product.
3. Set your Ad spend budget. The first part of this is your maximum cost per click you’re willing to pay. The price for your ad to be displayed works like an auction. A very competitive keyword like “how to make money online” is being bid on by many people trying to outbid each other to get the top spot, so the price per click will be much higher. Alternatively, “Millersburg, Ohio nail salon” is a very specific keyword that will have fewer people bidding on it, so the price per click will be much less.
Prices can range anywhere from a couple cents per click, to upwards of $40 per click. It all just depends on the competitiveness of the keyword.
The second part of your budget is your daily limit. This sets the amount you’re willing to spend per day on clicks. So if you are willing to spend $50 per day, you set that as your daily budget, and then once you’ve used up that amount, your ads will stop being displayed.
4. Write your ad. This is the final step to setting up your adwords campaign. You write whatever you think will entice viewers to click on your ad. As long as you stick within their ad writing guidelines, you can write whatever you want.
5. Once you’ve chosen keywords, set your budget and written your ad, your PPC campaign is ready to roll! It will begin displaying your ads on the search results page within a few hours.
The thing you have to understand about PPC, is that it really is a two-edged sword. It can be a terrific way to bring tons of highly-targeted leads to your business, but, if not used properly it can end up costing you a whole lot of money. For example, if you choose too many keywords or the wrong kind of keywords, you may get a lot of clicks, but you won’t be getting any good leads or conversions. Then all you’re left with is really big bill you owe Google!

These two parts, on-site optimization and off-site optimization both must be done correctly or your website will not reach its full ranking potential and you’ll end up wasting a great deal of time, energy, money or all three of those things.
Today, I’m going to go into detail about the first component of SEO, on-site optimization. I’ll discuss off-site optimization in a later post.
On-site optimization is the process of making your website’s content (actual copy on the pages, images tags, headings, webpage structure, titles and meta-data) optimized for specific keyword phrases that you are targeting. This process, unlike off-site optimization, only has to be done once, and updated whenever you change your website’s content or change targeted keywords.
When it comes to optimizing your content for specific keywords, you need to walk a somewhat fine line. Obviously, the keywords need to be in your content, titles and tags, but you don’t want them stuffed everywhere. The general rule of thumb is to keep your content reader-friendly, with the keywords sprinkled throughout.
One of the most important parts of on-site optimization is the title of your webpages. You always want to have your targeted keywords mentioned at least once in the titles of your pages. The title of your webpage tells visitors (and Google) what that particular page is about, so you want your keywords in the title so Google knows that is a very relevant match for that keyword and it will display it higher up in the search results for that keyword.
On-site optimization is important, but don’t overestimate it. Proper on-site optimization can only take you so far. It is done once, and that’s it. After optimizing your site, you’d probably notice a nice jump in the search results ranking, but it’s most likely not going to stick you at the #1 spot (unless the keyword has absolutely no competition).
On-site optimization will get you about 25% of the way there; what takes your website the rest of the 75% to the number one spot is off-site optimization, the building of quality links to your website.
I have a good example of how on-site optimization can affect your website’s ranking. I picked up new client this month, millerhaus.com. They are a Bed and Breakfast in Ohio.
Their website had absolutely no real search engine optimization done to it, on-site or off-site. The first thing I did was improve their on-site optimization. No off-site optimization was done during this time, no linking at all. All I did was optimize their homepage for their targeted keywords. The effects of these changes in their search position in Google is very interesting. Here it is:
|Keyword||Before On-Site Optimization||After On-Site Optimization|
|B & B keyword 1||Not within the top 100 results||#18|
|B & B keyword 2||#47||#27|
|B & B keyword 3||#43||#21|
|B & B keyword 4||#46||#23|
|B & B keyword 5||Not within the top 100 results||#25|
|B & B keyword 6||Not within the top 100 results||#23|
Note: Results are referring to Google’s organic search results
As you can see, some simple on-site optimization jumped their website up a minimum of 20 places in the rankings! Now, you have to take these results with a grain of salt, because these results will not be typical for all websites. It’s determined mainly on the competitiveness of the keywords. And these keywords are relatively low-competition. But the principle remains the same no matter what the competition is, on-site optimization can only get you part-way there.
So, the results from the on-site optimization are good, yes, but the thing is, the website isn’t ranking on the first page for any of the keywords, and THAT is where it needs to be! This is what I mean when I talked about the effectiveness of on-site optimization. If I didn’t do another thing with the site, it would stay relatively where it is ranking now. It is the off-site optimization, the building of links to the site that will take the site from the 2nd and 3rd pages and blast it to the top of the first page!

You may have the most well-done, captivating, sales-generating website in your industry, but it will do absolutely nothing for you if no one can find it! Websites,no matter how well-constructed, will never get visitors when lost in the cyber abyss of pages 3-100 of search engine results. Google, and the other major search engines, are very picky about who they choose to show on the first page. This is where search engine optimization comes in. It is the process of optimizing your website so that the search engines decide it is an excellent match for certain keywords, therefore listing it at the top of the results.
Today, the Internet is the number one tool consumers use to find products and services. Four out of every five Internet users search online for services and products to buy. Forget getting listed in the yellow pages, their most common use these days is as door stops! And the effectiveness of radio, TV and billboard ads continues to decline. Whether or not you want to admit it, the Internet is where people are turning to find everything they need.
Here’s another staggering statistic – the #1 search result listing grabs over 42% of search traffic, while the #2 result scrapes barely 12 percent! If you’re not on the first page, you may as well not be listed at all, because no one is going to see your site. All the while, your competition who has optimized their websites will be at the top, taking in all the new customers who find them online.
If you have a website and have been disappointed with the lack of traffic and resulting sales, it certainly is not because there are not enough people searching in your niche. Trust me, they’re there, with credit cards in hand, ready to buy! Your lack of website traffic is because you’re not listed high enough for the right keywords.
Search Engine Optimization is not a guessing game. There are defined steps of SEO that will get your site to the top of Google and the other search engines. Getting to the top of the search engines is all about three main things - relevancy, popularity and stability. We increase these three factors for your website, which in turn makes your site so attractive to Google that it can’t help but list it in the top results for your niche’s keywords.
Keyword and Key Phrase Analysis
The foundation of search engine optimization is sound keyword research. The first thing we do is analyze keywords and phrases Internet users are using, in addition to geographic location keywords, and determine which are the most relevant to your business. These keywords are what we will insert into your website’s tags, titles and content so the search engines will determine that your site is a good match for those search terms.
This account for roughly 50 percent of the SEO campaign, as it is critical to your success. We implement on-site link building strategies, as well as build one-way incoming links from other websites to your website. This greatly improves the relevancy of your site for targeted search terms.
This is another important part of SEO, because your site must be easily accessed and read by the search engines. This ensures the search engines will be able to index the content of each page, which shows them the relevancy of your site for our targeted keywords.
Analytical Software Implementation
If your website currently does not have analytical software installed to track and monitor visitor trends, we install and configure the software. Also, we track and report your website’s search engine positioning and SEO data each month. This ensures that you are seeing real and tangible results from your SEO campaign.
SEO is certainly not a “one and done” type of project, that can be walked away from. It must be updated and added to on a regular basis to keep your ranking, and also to account for any changes in search engine algorithms (what determines website quality and relevance). We update your project monthly, and also ensure that any new pages you add are included in our SEO implementation.
PPC (Pay Per Click) Management
This is used as a supplement to organic search engine optimization. It involves creating small ads that are displayed in search engine results. These are the “sponsored” listings you may notice at the very top and along the right hand side of search result pages. This is a common way to bring “instant” traffic to your site. Once you set up a PPC campaign, your ad begins running immediately, which can send a large influx of visitors to your website. You bid on which keywords you want to trigger your ad, and pay a set amount each time someone clicks on your ad. We do not recommend our clients use PPC as their sole source of website traffic, but it can be a very nice supplement to a solid organic search result campaign.

The first thing we do is sit down with you, in person or over the phone, and get to know your business and your goals. This is part of our absolutely free SEO consultation we offer to any business. Next, we’ll develop a monthly SEO and Internet marketing plan, designed specifically to suit your company’s unique needs, as well as your budget. Finally, we implement our SEO and marketing strategy using best practice methods that not only will get your site to the top, but will keep it there. This process begins the month you sign up with us, and will continue as long as is necessary. It is important to remember that SEO is a slow process, and can take months or years to achieve the best ranking (depending on what market you are in). But, most clients will see positive results within the first 2-3 months, and first page ranking within 5-8 months.
We can guarantee first page placement for your website for your desired keywords. We cannot guarantee the time length required to achieve it, as a certain level of unpredictability is always present when working with search engines. While we usually do achieve #1 ranking for targeted keywords, we simply cannot guarantee that result to every client. The ranking of websites is ultimately out of our hands, as it is controlled exclusively by the search engine companies, and therefore we would be silly to guarantee #1 results. Run far away from any company that guarantees “#1 result within 2 months!” or anything similar to that, as they obviously do not know what they are doing.
