One question that comes up quite frequently when I’m discussing search engine optimization with clients is, what does “organic” search refer too? If you’ve read up at all on SEO, you’ve probably come across this phrase. The best way to answer this question is to start with an overview of the search engine results page, because there are several kinds of results on that page, organic being one of them. I’ll refer to Google’s results in this post, since that is what most people use, although the explanation I give fits for all the major search engines.
Ever wanted to simply throw a switch and get floods of highly-qualified traffic to your website immediately? Sure you have! Traffic (website visitors) is the reason people have websites. They do nothing but cost you time and money if no one ever visits!
Problem is, nowadays, you can have the best, most attractive, engaging website, and very few people will wander across it unless you have putting some serious time and energy into search engine optimization. And SEO is a real pain in the behind to people who don’t know how to do it (that’s what companies like us are here for!).
The other bad part about SEO, besides being tedious, is that it can take a very long time to see results. It can take months to get on the first page of Google for specific keywords, and who wants to wait that long!?
Enter, Pay-Per-Click advertising! PPC advertising is a “magic” way to bring floods of website visitors directly to your website immediately. I’m talking like, hundreds or thousands of visitors overnight! Sounds interesting, huh? It sure is!
Search engine optimization can be broken down into two main types, on-site optimization and off-site optimization. On-site optimization describes the optimization of your actual website pages, while off-site optimization refers to mainly to the process of building quality one-way links from other website to yours.
These two parts, on-site optimization and off-site optimization both must be done correctly or your website will not reach its full ranking potential and you’ll end up wasting a great deal of time, energy, money or all three of those things.
Today, I’m going to go into detail about the first component of SEO, on-site optimization. I’ll discuss off-site optimization in a later post.
What is On-Site Optimization?
On-site optimization is the process of making your website’s content (actual copy on the pages, images tags, headings, webpage structure, titles and meta-data) optimized for specific keyword phrases that you are targeting. This process, unlike off-site optimization, only has to be done once, and updated whenever you change your website’s content or change targeted keywords.
